Background of Experiences

Dan Rothweil

After an Honorable Discharge from the US Navy, Dan pursued his BSEE degree from San Diego State University.  After graduation Dan worked for Rohr Industries designing power and control systems.  He went on to General Atomics Fusion Research Facility starting off as an engineer and then advancing to Lead Engineer of the Power Systems group.  Here Dan published a paper on transferring RF Energy to Heat Plasma.  From GA Dan went on to Cymer Laser where he was responsible for pulsed power designs and studies.  Dan was promoted to manage engineering project teams and product development programs.  Dan is associated with nine Cymer patents and received his Master Degree in Executive Leadership from the University of San Diego while working at Cymer.  In 2004 Dan left Cymer and started D-Squared Product Development.  As President of D-Squared Dan manages his own product designs as well as those for others.  He has international program management experience in both engineering and manufacturing.  In 2009 Dan started The Fair Guy’s to grow direct sales channels for his associated products.

Dan has 23 years of design and program management experiences with multiple successes.  Dan has established a history managing domestic and international cross functional teams through a phased gate development process.  D-Squared Product Development has tenured experience designing, patenting, prototyping, manufacturing, marketing and selling products of diverse complexity.

Cymer Laser: Program and Project Manager, Domestic and International Design Team Management

Responsible for multi-discipline product development teams who met defined objectives.  Effectively managed program management teams comprised of marketing, finance, engineering, manufacturing, released products, and corporate training.  Manage both domestic and international teams.

·         Program Manager Member on Outsourced Laser Platform Design and Manufacturing: $4.5 million, four companies, with cross discipline teams from design feasibility through pilot production in 11 months.

·         Program Managed F2 Laser: $900,000 concept and feasibility (C&F) assessment, 15 staff members, five month effort.

·         Program Managed ArF laser Pilot Production Release Phase: $250,000, 20 member staff, and 5 month effort.

·         Program Engineer, Increased Laser Rep-Rate: $75,000 C&F assessment, led core team of pulse power and control system engineers over a 6 month effort.  Concept went into production.

·         Program Engineer, KrF Laser Development: $2.5 million engineering design feasibility through production release, 35 cross discipline engineers over a 14 month period.

General Atomics: Lead Engineer (Associate Staff) - Power Systems (DIII-D National Fusion Facility)

·         Responsible for budgets and operational readiness of power system hardware used for fusion experiments and to support the facility in large.

·         Directed day-to-day operations of electrical engineering and technician staff for all pulse power systems (a 525 MW generator, two 300 kA power supplies, five 20 kA power supplies, 36 DC-DC converters, energy storage banks, facility AC distribution system and backup power system).

·         Managed hardware upgrades, new installations, and ongoing maintenance programs.

·         Designed a resonant power converter that coupled energy to plasma down a collimated chamber.
